Bed rail caps are practical. Not only do they give the truck some style upgrade, but they also keep the paint work and auto body safe from scratches and dings caused by bumps when loading or unloading cargo. The good ones can even handle pressure when using rope used to tie the cargo and keep it in place. With these accessories, the truck bed will be in a better shape and condition even after you drive the truck for a couple of years. The patterns and finish would add further to the looks of the truck, and the protection the caps provide can all help give your old truck a good value.
You have to clean the surface where the caps will be set first. Use some dry, clean cloth with car soap or rubbing alcohol to wipe off dirt and wax residue. Make sure that the bed rails are wiped clean and dried fully before taping on the caps. When rails are wet or moist, the adhesive may not stick.
For the adhesive not to dry quickly, you should limit its exposure to air. Do one side at a time. Don’t remove the pre-lined tape right away until you’ll be setting the cap in place and securing it with a tape. If the tape or adhesive is exposed to the air for too long, it may dry quickly and dust might get stuck to the tape. Avoid this at all cost.
Some bed caps are thin and won’t get in the way of mounting a tonneau cover. Overlapping hard covers can be fitted easily even with caps on the bed rail. Not all covers, however, can be mounted properly or be fitted perfectly if there are caps. Some won’t be flush with the truck bed, and this would be a problem. Other caps may be quite thick to allow it. You have to check with the dealer and manufacturer first to be sure.
ABS plastic is a good option because the material can more easily resist impact and scratches compared to metal. Another advantage to using caps made of ABS plastic is that they won’t get scraped easily or get dinged, which will ruin the look of the truck bed. They also won’t get corroded. Because they won’t form rust, the paint won’t be chipped or destroyed easily.
You have a choice whether or not you’ll get bed caps that can cover the pockets to prevent moisture or get caps with cutouts so that the stake pockets will stay open. You may easily get caps with punch-outs—this won’t be a problem.
While plastic bed caps don’t get scratched easily and won’t get corroded, they may be more prone to nicks and gouges, as opposed to metal bed caps.
